Sponsorship: Green Flag backs Road Safety

Campaign to stop young driver deaths gets Green Flag backing

A campaign highlighting the dangers posed by young drivers and the risks they face in their first years of motoring is to receive the backing of motoring assistance service, Green Flag.

The company confirmed its continued backing for the campaign for the sixth consecutive year. Road Safety Week, which runs between November 6-12, 2006, has become an important date in the diary for schools, businesses and community groups who run hundreds of road safety initiatives across the UK during the week.

National road safety charity Brake, which co-ordinates Road Safety Week, is aiming to raise awareness about the horrifying number of road crashes that involve young drivers and their passengers, while offering essential, practical advice to young people about staying safe on roads.

Statistics reveal that young drivers are more at risk of dying than any other age range of driver, often taking the lives of their young passengers with them. Only one-in-eight drivers in the UK is under 25 but this age group accounts for more than a quarter of all road deaths. Some 572 young drivers and passengers aged 17-24 were killed in road crashes on British roads in 2004 and 4,295 were seriously injured.

Green Flag spokesperson, Nigel Charlesworth, said: "As a leading motoring organisation, safety on the roads is of great importance to us, which is why Green Flag feels compelled to support Brake in its campaign to reduce the number of casualties and fatalities that happen so frequently to young people."

This year Brake will target influential media in a bid to get the message of responsible driving over to its target audience or new drivers and plans to conduct a survey in sixth form centres and colleges asking young drivers how they drive, or how they've been driven as passengers.

Green Flag has also confirmed that it will be the sole sponsor of a scheme to educate pre-school children in road safety called Beep Beep! Day. The initiative will involve nurseries and pre-school groups across the country between July and October.
